Chios Mastic Gum

Gum mastic is the resin produced by the mastic trees in the southern areas of the Aegean island of Chios. Although these trees grow throughout Greece and the Mediterranean, this aromatic crystal is unique to the mastic trees in this specific area.

Mastic became known in Greece through its use in chewing gum, of which it is a main flavoring ingredient.

Mastic is used mainly in sweets, for making holiday breads and liqueurs.

Modern research appears to confirm a range of beneficial properties which has made the spice increasingly popular. It’s now also being used outside the kitchen for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
